Dear Bonnie and family It was with great sorrow I read of Don's passing. I met you briefly when Jonathan attended Fairmont School in London. My son Michael and Jonathan were friends and we lived around the corner from you. (we were and I still am on Edgemere. My hubby John, passed away 5 years ago in June) Our brief friendship was one I have always remembered. Michael and I send our heartfelt condolences to you all. Hugs and prayers.

I will miss Don very much. He was a great figure in our family, someone who was so important in me becoming who I am today. I praise God for Don's amazing love in doing what he did for us and for the ways he was used to bring our family together. Vaughan and I had the pleasure of working with Don at Saunders Secondary School in our early years of teaching. He taught us so much and was a great mentor.! He was a terrific administrator and organizer and worked so hard! He encouraged me to become involved in track and field coaching as a young teacher! I remember Don as one of McMaster's outstanding varsity athletes (track & field and football) during the late 50s. As a loyal Mac grad, Don was a member of the "Friends of Football" , an "Adopt-an-Athlete" sponsor and supportive fan at Marauder's home games up until the time of his illness. Friends of Don's, from his student days at McMaster, will remember the famous smile and will sadly miss his engaging personality.

It is always sad to me when I read of a friend in the obits. Don and I played football together on the championship team and were good chums at Mac. We frequently would only come back into contact at McMaster reunions and some track events. When meeting we always fell back into old friendship routines. He was a fast on the track and on the football field. A fine person and friend. Condolences to his family who have I am sure lost a fine husband and Dad.

When I tell my kids the stories of my highschool glory days, running on the Saunders track team, I always pause a moment to think about Don. He was a true model of a what a coach should be. Selfless, dedicated, and you could tell by his smile that he loved the sport as much as when his atheletes excelled with his guidance. I'll never forget that smile.

The world lost a major contributor to the track and field community. He was passionate about the sport and it was evident through his coaching. He brought a lot of students and athletes together in the track & field world and created lasting friendships. Rest and Run peacefully Mr Young.

Don was my hero at 1st Baptist-a football and track star at South. I followed his path to South and Mac. At South he was my coach along with my Dad. What a team. Amazing eye for talent and he got the most out of it. He took us everywhere. Something that inspired me when I became a coach. A legend for sure- his memory will live on in lives that he touched.

Both Dr. Jamie Henderson and I, former students at London South Collegiate, would like to express to Don's family our sincere condolences at the passing of Don (Shadow) Young. Jamie and Don were football teammates and I (being younger) was a junior player at that time. Don was both an outstanding athlete (complete with blazing speed) and a wonderful person as well. We are saddened to hear of Mr. Young's passing. Our sincerest condolences to his family. Mr. Young was our phys-ed teacher and track coach while at South Collegiate in London. His inspirational enthusiasm was contagious. He treated us all as equals, regardless of our respective potentials (or lack of), and he simply asked for our best efforts. The lessons he taught by his example went beyond sport, faith and work ethic. For me, as for many I'm sure, Mr. Young has had a unequivocally positive influence on how we've lived our adult lives. Don taught me my PE Honours specialist course as a young PE teacher. He had a big impact on my career and had such an enjoyable, positive demeanour with a great sense of humour. Working with his son Gavin for the past 15 years has shown me how good of a Father he is as well. Great man, our sincere condolences.

Mr. Young was my Cross Country and Track and Field coach at Sir Wilfid Laurier Secondary School. He was a great role model, fantastic person and a caring coach. Through out the years I have thought about him periodically because if it wasn't for him pushing me to the fullest I wouldn't be the person I am today. Thank you Mr.Young, you will be missed.
