Story shared: Drive-Thru Friend

I first met dear Sherry at a evening DanceFit class held at the Elora Arena. We were fellow participants who enjoyed having snippets of conversation between dances. She loved to speak of her two girls, her husband and her cats. I lost track of Sherry for a few years but picked up the thread of our friendship via the drive-thru window one day at Tim Horton's. I was so happy to see her again and as she handed me my warm cup of coffee accompanied by her equally warm congenial smile, I said, "so this is where you have been hiding!" We resumed our relationship with our little exchanges, brief as they always were but big in a "glad to see ya" way. On days that I couldn't readily see her at the drive-thru window I would crane my neck to seek her out just to sing out a "hello Sherry"! It is my habit to wear a ladies fancy hat which she would comment on from time to time. I have always loved wearing hats but felt shy about wearing them out in public. Sherry was one of those special people that encouraged me to wear them. (Ruth-Ann, whom I did not know was Sherry's sister until after Sherry's passing, continues in this role...... not by means of the Tim Horton's drive-thru window but rather through the Transfer Station sliding glass window where I am the recipient of a smile and a little exchange.) Then there was a day when I sensed a sadness or something in Sherry's face that I couldn't quite puzzle out. I wanted to ask if everything was okay, but didn't want to intrude. (I'm sorry now that I didn't). I lost track of Sherry once again. Awhile later a friend of mine started working at the same Tim Horton's and I asked if she worked with a "Sherry" and she said no. I asked my friend if she would ask someone where she went. It was shortly after that I discovered a notice in the obituary section of the Wellington Advertiser giving me the sad answer to my question. Where is Sherry now? She lives through her girls, her sisters and any other soul that had the opportunity to know her in some big or small way.

Thinking about what I should write in honour of my Aunt Sherry has been tough! There are so many wonderful memories that we've shared...wheelbarrow races, cuddling kittens on our farm, swimming in your pool (no peeing of course!), and having campfires where Uncle Ron would cook us those delicious grilled cheese sandwiches! But really, when I think long and hard about what stands out most for me, it is the consistency of a loving, caring Aunt. Regardless of where I happened to be in my life, whether it be school, work, getting married, having babies, parenting struggles, Aunt Sherry was always interested in knowing about it! When Todd and I welcomed our second child, my Mom (Ruthann) was in Manitoulin Island with Grandma and Grandpa, and for anyone who knows me personally, not having my Momma there to share in that special moment was tough. But alas, Aunt Sherry, Uncle Ron, Candy-Lynn and Kristen and Aunt Tina made a point of coming to meet our sweet baby girl.....and I am ever so grateful to all of you for that. More recently, Aunt Sherry has shown her care and concern by reaching out to our son, Owen and connecting with him in such a way that this mother will forever be thankful for. It saddens me that our baby boy, won't have the same chance to know you in person, but he will definitely know you in spirit for we will not let that fade. Aunt Sherry, I promise to return that love, support and encouragement to your girls and to share in all of their life's moments with the same genuine interest that you did for me. I will strive to be the same dedicated mother and wife that you were in your life....thank you for setting an example for us to follow. You will be missed but not forgotten. Although I did not know Sherry well, except from Buckton family functions, I will always remember how Sherry frequently had a smile for me at the drive through window and a smile on the lid of my coffee at Tim Hortons here in Elora. Not having lived here very long, to be greeted by name at the drive through with a smile went a long way to make me feel more at home. My deepest sympathies go out to Sherry's family and friends whom, I am sure, will miss her dearly.

There are so many memories I have of Sherry its hard to know where to start and how to keep it at a comfortable length. I won't share the details of our lengthy fights and arguments because as a little sister I of course wanted to tag along everywhere my sisters went which antagonized Sherry to no end. But even though we had our many disagreements, she knew she could call me minutes before she was bringing Ron to the homestead to sweep the floor and do a quick clean up. She rewarded me well for that favour by buying my brother Tim and I our first, first-hand bicycles! She also helped to pay for music lessons for us which endeared me forever to any musical instrument other than the piano!(Obviously I was awful at it.) Sherry taught me many valuable lessons of life such as how to do laundry at a laundromat, how that has become helpful! My favourite memories of Sherry though are when she was working late and I got to stay up to have a snack with her, she made the best cheese sauce ever and I hope she enjoyed the banana splits I made for her. I love those memories and others dearly and will always hold them close to my heart. I just wish we could have had more time to make more memories. I miss you my big, brave, strong sis. xoxo

To the Miller and Buckton families I am so sorry for your loss. Sherry was an a wonderful Mother and wife ...We were friends in our younger years ..We had alot of fun and sleep overs ..I went to school with sheila ...and she introduced me to her sister Sherry ..I remember wakeing up cold winter mornings and there mom would make us a nice hot breakfast ..and we would hang out all day ...Night time the 3 of us would do alot of baby sitting and listeing to the Meat loaf record over and over again I think we wore it out lol...and knew every song and every word :) ..I always remember where ever Sherry was Sheila was ..I knew I could find both of them :) I left Elora and moved to Guelph ... Every now and then we would run into each other ...and have a couple laughs about the crazy fun things we did ...I know she married her soul mate.. one true love and was so happy..and Had two beauiful girls ...RIP ..Sherry you will be missed by so many people...You touched alot of peoples hearts and they will all fondly remember you ....Sandra Britenden

I remember going to Aunt Sherry's for a swim during the summer, we spent hours in the pool cooling off enjoying the company and having a lot of fun. My favourite memories were of Hibou Park in Owen Sound and seeing the love between Aunt Sherry and Uncle Ron, didnt matter how long they had been married they still had the love from when they were teenagers and were caught a time or two acting like one. If I learned anything from her is that you deserve unconditional love from your partner. It was nice to see her at the Christmas party and talk about plans of getting together more often. We talked about a girls weekend away, it will still happen, just Aunt Sherry will be in the sunset. When I take a walk now, I look for the sunset so I can say hi. We will miss you always, but you have gave us lasting loving memories to hold on to. We love you.

When I think about Sherry I am awed by her dedication to her daughters and husband, my brother Ron. She was also quick to help out family members in need. I know she helped me through a difficult time in my life, for which I am eternally grateful. Sherry was always my bright and shining face at 6 in the morning working at Tim Hortons. She always made you smile and would listen to you when you needed someone to talk to. She was like a mom to everyone at Tims and you knew you could always talk to her. She will be missed dearly by all. My condolences to the family.

Sherry was like a second mom to me growing up. my friends and I always referred to Sherry as "the cool mom". Kristen and I went to kindergarten together so I've known the family for over 20 years. Sherry taught us girls many things. "its all fun and games untill someone looses an eye" "you be a strong and independent women, dont let anybody ever tell you that you cant do something" I remember spending DAYS at the Miller home in the summer time. Sleeping in the livingroom with Candy and Kristen. We would go swimming...something Sherry also teased us about "dont you be peeing in that pool now"...I remember going shopping with them...Ron was our driver :D...I started working at Tim Hortons and was having a rough time and Sherry was the only one that stuck up for me...I also remember one summer Kristen, Candy and I got into a fight (online) *we were suppose to be getting together for a BBQ at my house...about an hour later I saw Sherry practically pushing the girls up the driveway and told us all to behave and to make up..lol...Later in life the three of us took different paths and about 5-6 years ago we reconnected and I'm so glad...Sherry saw me in Walmart one day and asked me how I was and what I was doing...I said shopping for my new apartment with my b/f....Her first question was "is he a good boy and does he treat you right?" From that it was "you girls really need to start talking again" Since then we've gone out to the ranch for bar nights, I even went to the bucktons sisters night out, Storm games, and yes a passion party.... I adopted the name for Sherry "momma Miller" and that stuck throughout the years...Sherry touched my life in sooo many ways and I have soo many memories of spending time with her and the family... Sherry asked me to do something for her when she first started her chemo treatments and I promised her I would....:D It will be forever our secret... As I said to Sherry when I saw her on Friday...I will see you later Momma Miller...Love you

My condolences to Sherry's family. I met Sherry over 30 years ago. Being Helen's sister in law I was able to enjoy the Buckton family gatherings once and a while. Sherry and all the other family members made you feel like family when you were with them. Sherry was the kindest, loving person, and cherished the family getting together. There are so many memories that I will cherish. Always smiling, laughing, loving, always caring about everyone. Sherry it is not goodbye, it is until we met again may god hold you in the hollow of his hand. The songs today at the funeral were so fitting. Listening to the Rascal Flatts song, I sat and was flood with memories for long ago.

I had the pleasure of working with Sherry in Elora and she made it such fun. I can't say that I've met a nicer person at any Tim Hortons. My thoughts and prayers are with her entire family. Dearest Sherry I will never forget the times we spent together the sad times the bad times but most important the good times. How amazing it was that you and I were best freinds when we met are husbands at the same time and being a big part of each others wedding parties.I remember how you helped me teach my boys how to swim and the hard time we had getting Dustin in the water. The talks we would have while walking our kids to school or going to dance fit.The way you would support my kids in their sports and endeavours and how you introduced us to the area of Port Elgin. Whenever I am up there and I see a sunrise I will think of your smiling face and as I see the sun set I will know that you are at peace . Mom, I know your in a better place now. No more pain, but it is so hard to say good bye. You are not just my mom, your my best friend. We do everything together. I don't know how I'm going to get threw this without you here. So many good times and memories with you, but there were so many more we were suppose to make. You know I love you even though I didn't say it as much as I should. You made me who I am today, you held my hand when times were hard, you wiped away my tears and made me see the best in everything and everyone. Over five years ago, I nervously started my first day at Tim Hortons, Elora. As I walked onto the floor to station 3, a bright, shining, huge smiling face greated me. It wasn't on a cup lid, as customary with Timmy's, but was coming from a wonderful lady who happily greated and welcomed me to the Tim Hortons family immediately and told me her name was Sherry. Sherry had the amazing natural ability to make everyone feel welcome, and special. She drew the smiley face on every lid, and wanted to make everyone's day special in her own way. She made me feel welcome and comfortable that first day, and made every single person who crossed her path, even if through a glass window feel special and gave them a genuine smile. Sherry often spoke lovingly of her family, and had a way of sharing that made you feel like you were a long lost relative, always welcome to her life. We often spoke of her cats she adoringly doted on, and since I'm a dog person, we laughed alot sharing our stories of " which is best, cats or dogs" lol. We'll miss you dearly Sherry, but you've forever touched many lives deeply. Rest peacefully hun.
