Obituary for Harvey Williams

WILLIAMS, Harvey

Passed away at Grand River Hospital on Friday, Aug. 17, 2018, at the age of 80.

Harvey was born on Sept. 26, 1937 in Manchester, England to the late James Arthur and May (Glover) Williams. Adoring husband to Joan for 58 years. Proud father to Sharon Leigh, Lisa Alexis, and Matthew (Roxanna). Loving Grandpa to Sian, Emilie and Lucas. Pre-deceased by his brother Norman.

A skilled drafting engineer, Harvey started his career in England, working on construction cranes, the Concorde and nuclear submarines, before emigrating to Canada with his young family. After a few years in Burlington and Brampton, Harvey and Joan purchased and successfully ran the Lakeview Motel in Haliburton for 12 years. The family then moved to Caledon and Harvey returned to his drafting career, where he would work on components for the space shuttle's Canadarm and the International Space Station. Following retirement, Harvey and Joan moved first to Rockwood and then to their current home in New Hamburg.

A passionate Manchester United fan, Harvey loved spending Saturdays cheering on, and occasionally grumbling about, his hometown Red Devils. He loved music, a legacy passed down from his father who was a gifted tenor. One of Harvey's favourite memories was visiting a night club when he was 15 to listen to his dad belt out songs like "So Deep is the Night." He also loved travelling with his family, especially to sunny destinations, a passion each of his children has inherited.

Harvey always had a soft spot for animals, and will be greatly missed by his favourite feline, Sugar.

He also loved Sunday breakfasts, Sudoku, crosswords, playing Flipwords with Joan, and was a voracious reader.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Canadian MS Society or Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
